17 We Can Make A Life
LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)oa is very proud to introduce to you Fly My Pretties. Fly My Pretties has been one of the most challenging, yet highly rewarding projects the LOOP stable has ever released.

The original concept for Fly My Pretties was proposed to LOOP earlier in 2004 by The Black Seeds front man Barnaby Weir. Barnaby decided he wanted to collaborate with an assorted group of uniquely talented musicians who reside in the Capital City. He came to us at LOOP and said he wanted to gather these artists together in one spot, record what might evolve during their time together, film it as it happened... and then let it fly...

Barnaby hand-picked his side-kicks for this one-off project and what ensued was an all-star line up of some of Wellington’s most respected artists coming together for one four night showcase at Wellington’s Bats Theatre.

On the album fellow Black Seed and friend, Mike Fabulous, plays bass. Darryn Sigley, a familiar face in the Wellington music scene, contributes drums, backing vocals and percussion. Toby Laing, of Fat Freddy's Drop, laid down his trumpet to deliver melting Rhodes piano solo’s on the keys. Age Pryor performs guitar solo's that enthral, with Tessa Rain on vocals. Her cloud like voice stunned the audience each night.

Fly My Pretties also features the majestic talents of Samuel Flynn Scott, who enraptured the audience with lead guitar lines ranging from down-right stonking, to angelic. The brilliantly moody Quiet Girl, was written by Scott especially for the show. Its stark simplicity and honesty will move you. While Age Pryor’s Singing In My Soul is a classic, and beautifully captured within the surroundings of Bats Theatre.

Let’s Roll, the rockiest number of the show and album, features Wellington’s hairiest bar fly and bass-pluckin specialist, Nato from Paselode, on percussion is Flying Nun sweetheart, Brendan Moran.

The last tune of the performance, We Can Make A Life, is where the audience, at the request of Barnaby and Daniel Wheetman (on drums), were asked to become the backing chorus. This engaging interaction between musician and audience is the final track of the Fly My Pretties album.

With the top line cast on board, the project took off and before we knew it Bats Theatre was sold-out five nights straight. The lads were fitted out in costumes hand sewn by Wellington’s ISH label manager Sally Tran, an incredible set design was created by Carey Young and a focal point sculpture was developed for the project by Mikala Dwyer.

LOOP now proudly delivers to you Fly My Pretties - the fantastic live album. It captures the magic of those five nights at Bats Theatre in Wellington in an exclusive album, recorded live with no pre-recorded music, by a master of his art Dr Lee Prebble. Prebble needs little introduction, with his respected album recordings for The Black Seeds, Phoenix Foundation and Trinity Roots.

What you will hear on Fly My Pretties is what the music lovers at Bats Theatre those nights experienced... Come and take a listen before it flies away...
